Shopping at a Michigan farmers’ market has many benefits for you and your family.

Freshness – compared to most fruits and vegetables from a supermarket, farmers’ market produce is often picked less than 24 hours before it comes to the market.

Variety – instead of one type of tomato, farmers at farmers markets often have many varieties of tomatoes and other produce.

Relationships – as a farmers’ market shopper you can get to know the farmers and learn about how they raise their fruits and vegetables and more about where your food comes from.

Economic benefits – buying produce from a farmers market helps your local economy by keeping your food dollars in the community where you live.

Environmentally friendly – because there is less energy used to store and transport the produce.

Shopping Tips

  1. If you don’t know what something is – ask.  Talk to the farmer about any food item that grabs your attention. Ask them how to it was raised and how to prepare and cook it.  Farmers are proud of their products and want to share

  2. Don't be afraid to try something new! You may discover a new favorite food that will help improve your meals.  Try buying one "new" (to you) food item each time you visit a farmers market.

  3. Generally, you will find the best selections if you go early.

  4. Give your children a few coupons and let them buy whatever produce they want to eat. It's a good way to encourage them to eat healthier foods like fruits and vegetables.

  5. See what's available before making your decision. Get to know the different vendors and narrow down your choices before you start buying.

  6. Take some reusable bags with you when you go. Or at least don't throw away the plastic bags you used last time -- bring them back with you again so they can be reused.
